Executive Leadership Development for Aspiring Principals

Are you an assistant principal looking to elevate your leadership and prepare for the principalship?

This in-depth, five-session professional development series is designed specifically for assistant principals who are ready to explore the next level of school leadership. Each session—approximately four hours in length—focuses on critical skills and knowledge areas that aspiring principals need to lead schools effectively in today’s dynamic educational landscape.

Participants will develop a systems-level understanding of school operations, deepen their leadership competencies, and explore the mindset shift required when transitioning from assistant principal to principal. Key topics include:

  • Strategic School Improvement: Learn to lead data-informed improvement efforts, monitor impact, and engage staff in meaningful change.

  • Budget and Resource Alignment: Understand school finance, make strategic budget decisions, and allocate resources to drive instructional priorities.

  • Personnel and Team Leadership: Build and sustain strong teams, navigate performance challenges, and foster a positive adult culture.

  • Leading with Data, Culture, and Modeling: Cultivate a climate of high expectations, equity, and trust by using data effectively and modeling professional leadership.

  • Role Transition and Strategic Thinking: Explore the differences between AP and principal responsibilities, including vision setting, strategic planning, and high-level decision-making.

In addition, participants will gain practical experience in three often overlooked but essential areas of principal leadership:

  • Political Acumen & Stakeholder Management: Navigate district politics, build influence, and strengthen relationships with staff, families, central office, and the broader community.

  • Time Management for Principals: Learn how to prioritize leadership work, manage your calendar strategically, and delegate effectively.

  • Crisis Leadership: Practice decision-making under pressure and learn how to communicate clearly and lead with confidence during emergencies or sensitive situations.

The program also includes a mock interview lab, where participants rotate through both interviewee and interviewer roles, receive feedback, and build confidence in articulating their leadership vision.

Through real-world scenarios, peer collaboration, and self-reflection, this program empowers aspiring principals to lead with clarity, purpose, and credibility.
