The Digital Dilemma: Navigating Challenges When Helping Children and Families Address Screen Use

Christian F. Mauro, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  Dr. Mauro is the director of the APA Accredited Clinical Psychology Doctoral Internship Program and part of the executive team of the Master in Biomedical Sciences Program.  Clinically, he is the Director of the Psychosocial Treatment Clinic where he supervises and trains graduate students, psychology interns, and child psychiatry fellows in evidence-based practice for children, adolescents and families.  Dr. Mauro has been a certified cognitive behavioral therapist (CBT) on a number of NIMH funded clinical trials and was the CBT Supervisor for The Child and Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Treatment Study (CAMS) at Duke University.  He is a currently a member of the North Carolina Psychological Association’s Professional Affairs and Ethics Committee and is dedicated to interprofessional clinical education.

Sean Pumphrey, MSW, LCSW is a psychotherapist at ECU Physicians (Brody School of Medicine) in the department of Family Medicine. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill as an undergraduate and East Carolina University’s School of Social Work as a graduate student. Sean is a regional and national speaker and has a diverse experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families.  He is currently Graduate Teaching Faculty at ECU’s Graduate School of Social Work and has taught at the University of North Carolina @ Pembroke and at Pitt Community College.

Alicia Freeman, LCMHC, LCAS-A, is the Mental Health First Aid Program Manager with Behavioral Health Springboard at the UNC-CH School of Social Work. Ms. Freeman is the owner of Ascend Counseling, PLLC, where she provides counseling, coaching, and consultation services. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist – Associate. Ms. Freeman’s current research focus includes Racial Trauma and Resilience. She also participates in various committees and coalitions dedicated to Mental Health, Substance Prevention, Suicide Prevention, and Health Equity.
