Columbus County Schools Leads North Carolina in FAFSA Completion, Expanding Postsecondary Opportunities for Rural Students
Columbus County Schools is setting a high bar for postsecondary access, leading North Carolina in FAFSA completion for the past two years and redefining what is possible for rural students’ futures. With a FAFSA completion rate of 79.2% in 2024 and an impressive 88.1% in 2025, the district has demonstrated that intentional, systemwide support can remove financial barriers and open doors to college and career opportunities for every graduate.
A Systemwide Commitment to Postsecondary Success
Recognizing longstanding challenges related to graduation rates and chronic absenteeism, Columbus County Schools has made comprehensive postsecondary planning a districtwide priority. By introducing early high school advising, students begin in 9th grade to intentionally connect GPA, coursework, and goal-setting to clear college and career pathways.
Aligned Pathways from High School to College and Career
The district has implemented a cohesive K–16 approach to readiness, anchored by programs such as College and Career Promise (CCP), Career and Technical Education (CTE), and structured advisory frameworks. With fewer than 5% of students currently enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses, these initiatives are strengthening academic rigor, expanding guidance, and increasing exposure to postsecondary opportunities throughout all four years of high school.
Measurable Impact on Graduation and Enrollment
Two years of intensive FAFSA support and focused senior-level postsecondary planning have already produced meaningful results. The district’s graduation rate has increased from 85.4% in 2024 to 88.5% in 2025. Additionally, more than 70% of graduates are now enrolling in community college or university programs, demonstrating that increased FAFSA completion is directly translating into more affordable and accessible postsecondary pathways for students across Columbus County.
Looking Ahead
Columbus County Schools remains committed to sustaining and expanding this progress by embedding postsecondary planning into everyday school experiences. With a goal of surpassing a 90% graduation rate while reducing chronic absenteeism, the district continues to align advising, coursework, and financial aid access. FAFSA completion is no longer a one-time milestone—it is a cornerstone of long-term college and career success for every student.
